Lesson 20: The Great White Throne

The Book of Revelation, Chapter 20

1.  What did the angel coming down from heaven have in his hand?  See verse 1.

Answer: The to the and a great .

This is symbolic language as we will plainly see.  The term “bottomless pit” is translated from the Greek word “abussos,” and is the same word that was used in Genesis 1:2 when the Old Testament was translated into Greek.  The Greek translation of the Old Testament was called the Septuagint.  The Greek word abusso means the same as “formless and void.”  It is the condition that this world will once again be in after Jesus’ glorious return!

2.  What does the angel do to Satan?  See verse 2.

Answer: He him for a .

We know that the devil is a spirit being and cannot be bound with a literal chain.  This is symbolic for a chain of circumstances that leaves the devil powerless to act.  His hands will be tied, so to speak!  This is because when Jesus returns, the righteous will be taken to heaven, and the wicked will be slain by the brightness of His coming!  See 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 and 2 Thessalonians 2:8 again.  The devil will have no one to tempt or deceive, therefore he will be bound -- his hands tied!

3.  Where was the devil cast into?  See verse 3.

Answer: The .

The devil and his demons will be limited to the desolated earth for a thousand years. They will have to roam the earth and see the death and destruction caused by their rebellion against God and His righteous laws!  Notice that finally the devil will be forced to “shut up”!

4.  How long will the devil and his demons be in this “bottomless pit.”  See verse 3 again.

Answer: For a .

This is the 1000 year Millennium which begins when Jesus returns to this earth and takes the righteous of all ages to heaven.  This earth will be left “without form and void” during this time.  See Jeremiah 4:23-27.

5.  What was given to those who sat on the thrones?  See verse 4.

Answer: .

This verse refers to the executive phase of the judgment.  Before the Lord’s return, the time we are living in now, is the investigative phase of the judgment.  It determines who receives the rewards Jesus will bring with Him when He returns!  See Revelation 22:12.   During the 1000 year Millennium, both angels and wicked men and women will be judged.  See 1 Corinthians 6:2.   After the 1000 years, the determination of the judgment will be executed against the wicked!  See verse 12.

6.  What do the righteous “souls” who had been beheaded, but who had gotten the victory over the beast, and his mark and his image receive.  See verse 4 again.

Answer: They " and with Christ a ."

These “souls” were raised when Jesus returned!  This is why it says they “lived” and reigned with Christ a thousand years.  This verse does not say that we have immortal souls! These souls or people were resurrected earlier when Jesus returned!  It was then that they put on immortality!  1 Corinthians 15:51-54.

7.  When do the “rest of the dead” (the wicked) live again or are resurrected?   See verse 5.

Answer: When the are .

Jesus taught that there are two resurrections, one called the “resurrection of life” of the righteous that takes place at Jesus’ return, and the other, called the “resurrection of damnation” which takes place after the thousand year Millennium!  See John 5:28-29.

8.  Why are those who have part in the "first resurrection" (when Jesus returns) especially blessed?  See verse 6.

Answer: Because the has no over them.

The second death is an eternal death from which there is no resurrection!  It is the second death that is the wages of sin! Those who are resurrected when Jesus returns, along with those who are living, are changed in the “twinkling of an eye.”  They need not worry about or fear the “second death!”

9.  What will happen to Satan after the 1000 years?  Verse 7.

Answer: He will be out of his .

After the 1000 years, Satan will be loosed “a little season.”  Verse 3.   Because the wicked are resurrected, and he now has people to control and tempt, the devil’s hands are no longer tied!  He is free to work for a “little while.”

10.  What does Satan do now when the wicked billions are resurrected?  See verse 8.

Answer: He goes out to the , to them to .

Notice these nations are called “Gog and Magog.”  This is the same name used in Ezekiel 38 which so many wrongfully believe refers to nations of the earth fighting against literal Israel!  “Gog and Magog” are symbolic names for the nations of the earth in their rebellion against God!  Satan gathers them together, the resurrected wicked, to fight against God’s holy city after the 1000 years.  This might be called phase two of the Battle of Armageddon!

11.  What does this ghoulish army of resurrected wicked led by Satan do?  See verse 9.

Answer: They surround the of the , and the city.

The New Jerusalem will descend from heaven after the 1000 years.  We know that because the wicked surround the “camp” of the beloved city!  The host of wicked watch God’s beautiful city descend from heaven.  Inside that city will be the Lord’s redeemed.  Jesus will make a place for the city as He precedes it.  See Zechariah 14:3-4.

Think about this scene.  Every one who has ever lived will be there.  The righteous who have been saved by the blood of the Lamb are safe forever in the city!  The wicked, resurrected for their judgment of the second death are outside the walls in a great army led by their general Satan!  All the wicked of all ages are there, Hitler, Attila the Hun, Nero, etc.  They follow Satan because they have no choice, and because his voice is familiar to them.  They have been following him all their lives!

12.  What happens to the wicked at this time?  See verse 9 again.

Answer: God sends down from upon them and they are by the .

This fire “devours” the wicked.  They will be utterly destroyed. In verse 10 it says the devil, and the beast, and false prophet are in this fire!  Although verse 10 says they are tormented “forever and ever,” we must remember that Revelation uses symbolic language.  We know that the devil will eventually be destroyed by this fire and never be again!  See Ezekiel 28:12-19 for proof of this.  Like the beast and the false prophet are symbolic of the Roman Church and fallen Protestantism, we can also say that the word forever here has a symbolic meaning.  Jonah said that he was in the belly of the great fish “forever.”  But he was there just three days and three nights!  See Jonah 2:6.   Today we might say, “I must have waited forever in that traffic jam!”  In that case, we really don’t mean “forever,” but a long period of time. We know very clearly that the wicked will suffer the “second death” in this Lake of Fire!  Let's read on.

13.  What is “opened” at this time, when the Lord sits on His “great white throne”?  See verses 11-12.

Answer: .

These books will be used in the judgment.  In these books is recorded every sin committed by those who rejected forgiveness through the blood of the Lamb.  One of these books is called the “Book of life.”  One gets their name in this book when they accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!  Is your name in the Lamb’s book?  If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior, then your name is there!  If not, then do it NOW!

Notice that verse 13 says the dead were raised!  This is referring to the second resurrection!  It says “hell” gave up the dead that were in it.  The word translated “hell” is the Greek word “hades,” and means the “grave or the abode of the dead”!  The grave will be forever destroyed, and that is why it says “death and hell were cast into the lake of fire”  in verse 14.

14.  What is the lake of fire called?  See verse 14.

Answer: The .

This is the fate of the wicked!  They will suffer the “second death.”  From this death there is no resurrection!  They are destroyed forever in the lake of fire!  “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not PERISH, but have eternal life”!

15.  What happened to those who were not found written in the book of life?  See verse 15.

Answer: They were into the of .

Bonus Study On Baptism

1.  Baptism symbolizes the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. See Romans 6:3-4.

2.  Those who have been baptized have put on the Lord Jesus Christ.  See Gal. 3:27.

3.  Once you understand the plan of salvation, nothing should hinder you from being baptized.  See Acts 8:36-37.

4.  Jesus was baptized as an example for us.  He did it to “fulfill all righteousness.”  One of God’s requirements for the believer is baptism.  See Matthew 3:13-17 & 1 John 2:6.

5.  If a person is truly converted at the time of baptism, he or she will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit at that time.  See Acts
2:37-38.

6.  There are many different “gifts” of the Holy Spirit.  They include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, prayer, miracles, discernment, the ability to speak and interpret different tongues (languages), prophecy, teaching, ministry, exhortation, giving, administration, and mercy.  Each believer has at least one of these gifts!  See 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 & Romans 12:5-8.

7.  In order for baptism to be a true regenerating experience, it must be preceded by repentance.  See Acts 2:37 again.

8.  Jesus said “He that believeth AND is baptized shall be saved.” See Mark 16:16 & John 3:5.

9.  Believers are to be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  This is Jesus’ clear instructions to us! See Matthew 28:19.

10.  A person should be taught to obey God’s commandments before he or she is baptized.  See Matthew 28:20.

11. A person can be rebaptized if they learn additional important truths.  See Acts 19:1-5.

12.  There is only one form of baptism that the Lord recognizes. The word “‘baptizo” means to “immerse completely” in the water.  Jesus “came up out of the water.”  The Bible does not recognize baptism by “sprinkling,” neither does it recognize infant baptism!  See Ephesians 4:4-5, Matthew 3:16, and John 3:23.  They wouldn’t need “much water” if they baptized by sprinkling!

13.  If you have believed in Jesus, and have not yet been baptized according to the Bible’s instructions, then you should be baptized as soon as possible!  Acts 22:16.
