Lesson 3: The Message to Laodicea |
![]() |
Sardis was the next of the churches to receive a message
from Jesus.
The Sardis church period begins approximately 1517 and extends possibly
to 1798. It is the Reformation period of the church during which
time the great reformers like Luther, Knox, Calvin and the like protested
the abuses and false doctrines that had crept into the Roman Church. |
1. Jesus said those in Sardis had a "name" that indicated they were alive, but what did He say they were? See Revelation 3:1.
Answer: .
![]()
Even though they were called “Protestants,” many of the churches had lapsed
into a state resembling, in certain ways, the church they had come out from!
This happened toward the end of this period of church history.
2. What did Jesus say about the “works” of the church in the Sardis
period? See
verse 2.
Answer: He did not find them to be before God.
![]()
The Protestant Reformation did not completely reach its full potential.
The churches began to wane in zeal and in many areas followed doctrines of the
fallen church.
It did not carry the church to complete doctrinal purity.
3. What did Jesus say He would NOT do to the overcomers in this period of the
church, and in fact in all periods of the church? See
verse 5.
Answer: He said He would NOT their out of the of .

This verse shows us that it is possible to have one’s name blotted out of the
book of life!
See also
Exodus 32:33.
4. What did Jesus set before the church during the Philadelphia period? See verses 6-8.
Answer: An .
![]()
The Philadelphia period of church history is the one just before the last
period -- Laodicea.
Hence, it must refer to a period of relatively modern times as far as the
prophetic application is concerned.
Many scholars believe that this period would describe the church from the late
1700s through the Great Second Advent Movement of the 1830s and early 40s
through 1844.
5. What did the Lord call those during this period who ridiculed the great
revivals and the great second advent movement that took place during this
period?
What “synagogue” did He say they belonged to? See
verse 9.
Answer: The synagogue of .
![]()
Many during this time were put out of their churches simply for
believing in the doctrine of Jesus’ soon return!
6. Those who lived during this period escaped what hour? See
Revelation 3:10.
Answer: The hour of .
![]()
This refers to the great test that will come upon the world in the last
days.
The last days of the church are represented by the Laodicean period which we are
now in!
Those of the Philadelphia period fell asleep in Jesus before the trials of the
last days.
But God’s grace will get us through all that shall come upon the
earth! See
Psalm 91.
7. Why did Jesus tell us to “hold fast” to what we have in faith? See verse 11.
Answer: So that no man might our .
![]()
This verse along with many others shows that it is possible to
make shipwreck of faith and lose salvation if we do not maintain a
close relationship with Jesus! Jesus said “he that endureth to the end, the
same shall be saved.”
See
Matthew 10:22
and
Hebrews 10:26-31.
8. Whom will Jesus make a “pillar” in His temple? Upon whom shall He write the Father’s name and the name of the New Jerusalem, and also His own “new name”? Revelation 3:12.
Answer: To the one who .
![]()
We must be overcomers in Jesus and not just drift along with the
tide! Jesus will seal forever those who overcome through His blood and
the word of their testimony.
See
Revelation 12:11.
Having a testimony
means having a personal experience with Jesus Christ!
9. What is the name of the seventh church mentioned in Jesus’ message
to the churches? See
Revelation 3:14.
Answer: .
![]()
This church symbolizes the last church on the earth before Jesus
returns. Christians living today are included in this Laodicean period!
We should especially heed the words of Jesus in this section of the book of Revelation
because it comes from “the faithful and true Witness”!
Also, notice that Jesus calls Himself the "beginning of the creation of God" in this
verse.
Some try to use this text to show that Jesus was a created Being. But the word
translated “beginning” here is more accurately translated “origin” as most study
Bibles show.
Jesus was the One who originated all of creation! This agrees perfectly with
Colossians 1:16-17.
10. Jesus said that many during this period are not hot or cold. What did He
say they were?
See
verses 15-16.
Answer: .
![]()
The church’s Lukewarm state makes the Lord sick to the point that He will
"spew" out (reject) those who are in this state! He wants us to be
“hot” and on fire for Him!
He would even rather we be “cold” and realize our need for Him than be comfortable
in a religion of compromise and formality!
11. What do many in the Laodicean church say they are? See
Revelation 3:17.
Answer:
and increased with .
12. But how does Jesus describe their condition?
Same verse.
Answer: He says they are , , , , and .
![]()
One can hardly imagine a more wretched condition! Yet many of the Laodiceans
are blind to their spiritual poverty!
13. What three things did Jesus counsel Laodicean Christians to “buy” from
Him?
See
verse 18.
Answer: , white and .
![]()
The gold tried in the fire probably refers to faith and love. These are
attributes that the true believer will have.
See
1 Peter 1:7
and
1 John 3:14.
The “white raiment” no doubt refers to the righteousness of Christ which the Lord will place on the truly converted. This robe replaces our filthy rags of our own righteousness! See Isaiah 64:6 and Revelation 7:9,13-14.
The “eye-salve” refers to that spiritual discernment we receive through the Holy
Spirit that enables us to see clearly the great issues of life and death!
The gold, the white raiment and the eye salve all can be bought from Jesus for
free!
See
Isaiah 55:1-2.
14. What does the Lord do to those He loves? Revelation 3:19.
Answer: He and them.
![]()
A Loving Father disciplines his children because he wants to protect them and
keep them safe.
He wants them to grow up and be happy and successful! Our heavenly Father
wants that for us, but we need His
discipline and nurture! He wants us to repent of our sins and be saved and
forgiven!
Let us not become angry at God when He teaches us new things, or when He
disciplines us! See
Hebrews 12:6-11
and
1 Peter 4:12-13.
15. In these last days, where is Jesus standing and what is He doing? Revelation 3:20.
Answer: He is standing at the and He is .

This door is the door of our heart! Jesus is asking us to let Him in! Have you
opened that door yet?
If you haven’t, won’t you do it just now? Pray the prayer of faith found in
lesson 1 if you haven’t prayed it before!
If you pray that prayer, you will have Jesus living inside you, your sins will be
forgiven, and you will now possess eternal life as long as you maintain your
connection with Jesus!
16. What promise does Jesus give to the ‘overcomers’ in these last days?
See
verses 21 and 22.
Answer: They will with Him on His !

Bonus Study on the Godhead
1. The Lord’s name in Hebrew is Yahweh. Whenever you see the word
LORD in all capital letters in the King James Bible, that is where the sacred name
YAHWEH appears in the original Hebrew from which our
English Bible is translated. See Exodus 3:14-15 & Isaiah 42:8.
2. The word for God in Hebrew is ELOHIM (pronounced L-O-HEEM). This
term literally means “Mighty Ones.”
It is a plural term like the word family is. There can be ONE family with
THREE members.
In the same way, there is ONE ELOHIM, with three members, the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit.
The angels cry "Holy, holy, holy" three times in heaven. This may be because
there are three members of Elohim -- the
ONE Godhead! See Matthew 28:19 & Isaiah 6:1-3.
3. The Spirits of both Jesus and His Father make up the Holy Spirit, which has
a unique personality of His own!
See John 14:23 & Revelation 22:17.
4. Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as a person, not an it! See
John 14:26 & 1 Corinthians 2:11.
5. Jesus explained that He and His Father were ONE in the same way He wanted
His disciples to be ONE!
See John 17:11.
6. Stephen prayed to Jesus calling Him “God.” See Acts 7:59.
7. At His birth, Jesus was given the name “Immannuel” which means “God with
us.”
Matthew 1:23.
8. The Bible says that in Jesus “dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead
bodily”!
See Colossians 2:9.
9. The Bible calls Jesus God by saying “God” was the one who shed His blood
for us!
See Acts 20:28.
10. The Bible teaches that Jesus was equally God, along with His Father.
Phil. 2:5-6 & John 10:30-33.
11. Thomas called Jesus “my Lord and my God.” Jesus did not correct him
because He was and is God!
See John 20:28.
12. Jesus said we are to worship God only, yet He allowed people to worship Him!
This was because He was God with us!
See Matthew 4:10
& Matthew 8:2 & 15:25.
13. The Father calls His Son “God,” and He commands all the angels to “worship
Him”!
Hebrews 1:6-8.
14. The apostle plainly called Jesus (the Word) "God." See John 1:1-3.
15. Whoever denies that Jesus is God the Son, does not have the Father!
See 1 John 2:23.
