The Godhead
Bible Marking Assignment
Lesson 3

The Lord’s name in Hebrew is Yahweh.  Whenever you see the word LORD written in all capital letters in the King James Version of the Bible, that is where the sacred name YAHWEH appears in the original Hebrew from which our English Bible is translated.

See Exodus 3:14-15 & Isaiah 42:8.

The word translated God is the Hebrew word "Elohim" (pronounced L-O-Heem).  This term literally means “Mighty Ones.”  It is a plural term like the English word family is.  For example, there can be three persons in ONE family.  In the same way, there are three Persons in the ONE Godhead -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

See Matthew 28:19 & Isaiah 6:1-3.

According to Jesus’ words in John 14:23, the spirits of both Him and His Father (Yahweh) are part of the Holy Spirit in a way that we cannot completely understand.  In this way the Holy Spirit has a personality of His own and is the third “Person” of the Godhead of Elohim.  Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as a Person, not an it!

See John 14:23,26 & Revelation 22:17.

Jesus explained that He and His Father were ONE in the same way that He wanted His disciples to be ONE -- in unity, love, and purpose!

See John 17:11.

Stephen prayed to Jesus calling Him “God.”  At His birth, Jesus was given the name “Immanuel” which means “God with us.”  The Bible says that in Jesus “dwelt all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”  The Bible also says that it was “God” who shed His blood to save sinners.

See Acts 7:59, Matthew 1:23, Colossians 2:9, and Acts 20:28.

The Bible teaches us that Jesus was part of the Godhead and a Being worthy to be called “God.”  John said “the Word (Jesus) was God.”  Thomas called Him “my Lord and my God.”  Jesus allowed people to “worship” Him, and yet He said that only God was worthy of worship.  His acceptance of this worship is an indication that He was part of the Godhead, and thus worthy of worship!  The Father calls the Son “God” and even commands all the holy angels to “worship Him!”  Those who deny the deity of Jesus cannot really have the Father!

See 1 John 2:23, John 1:1-3, Matthew 4:10, Matthew 8:2, Philippians 2:5-6 & John 10:31-33.
