Lesson 31: The Good News about How we are Saved

1.  What is the gospel?  1 Corinthians 15:1-4.

Fill in:  “Moreover brethren, I declare unto you the gospel, which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are , if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless you have believed in .  For I delivered unto you, first of all, that which I also received, how that Christ for our according to the ; and that He was , and that He again the third day according to the Scriptures.”

The gospel includes the birth, life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ!  That is the “good news” -- the gospel!

God gave us the gift of salvation when the plan to send His Son was conceived in the mind of Almighty God.  When you buy a gift for someone, that gift really is the person’s gift when you purchased it!  God has already given us the gift of eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ.  True, we must accept it, but it already has been given us.  We don’t need to try and earn it!  If we earned it, it would not be a gift!  We do not work for a gift. It is free.  All we have to do is accept it!

There are some false gospels out there.  One of those false gospels is dispensationalism.  It goes something like this: “the people in the Old Testament were saved by the law, but in the New Testament we are saved by grace.”

2.  Does Hebrews 4:1-2 say the gospel was preached to “them” in the Old Testament as well as those in the New Testament?

Answer:  .

So the idea that there were different methods of salvation according to different periods of times, or dispensations is not Biblical!  That’s why Revelation 14 mentions the “everlasting gospel.”  It never changes!  Before the cross they looked forward by faith to it.  We look back by faith to the same cross!

3.  What causes people to be lost?  John 3:17-18.

Fill in:  “God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the through Him might be .  He that believeth on Him is not .  But he that not is already because he has not in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

It is unbelief that causes condemnation!

4.  In 2 Timothy 1:9-10 it tells us that Jesus has already saved all men.  Our work is to accept the free gift!

Fill in:   "Who (Jesus) HATH us  (this is past tense.  He already has saved us!) and called us with a , (this refers to sanctification or holiness which is the fruit of being saved!) not according to our , but according to His own purpose and , which was given us in Christ Jesus the began."

How could good works save us, if we were already saved in the gift of Christ before the world began!  Salvation is by grace, and not by works.  Through faith in God’s grace we receive the salvation already provided for us before the world began!  Verse 10 in the above Scripture says Jesus "abolished death" and brought "immortality to light."   He has already abolished the second death -- not the first death -- for people still die the first death, but Jesus has destroyed the second death, that is, eternal death, for all those who accept by faith the free gift of eternal life!

5.  Jesus came in a human nature just like ours so that He might do two things.  What are those two things mentioned in Hebrews 2:14-15?

Answer:  First, him that hath the of , that is the .  Second, them who through of death were all their lifetime subject to .

Those who do not believe the true gospel are living in fear and bondage!  If we accept the salvation freely offered, we stand before God as if we never sinned, and no longer need to fear the second death!

Another false gospel is the gospel of “Predestination” or “Calvinism.”  This is the idea that some are predestined to be saved, and some to be lost.

6.  Who did Jesus, by God’s grace, taste death for?  Hebrews 2:9.

Answer:  For man.

If He tasted death for every man, and the gift was given in Christ Jesus for every man, then predestination cannot be a true doctrine!  All who accept the gift of salvation will have eternal life!

7.  According to Romans 5:1-2, which comes first: peace, or the grace to stand in the faith?

Answer:  .

First we accept Christ’s salvation by faith, then we have peace. AFTER we have this gospel peace, we are then empowered to obey -- or stand!  Peace with God always precedes true obedience.  Anyone who is trying to obey God to earn His forgiveness, or His peace, simply does not understand the gospel! Grace to stand is a gift given to those who have accepted the free gift of salvation!  This is a very important point.  Never, ever forget it!

8.  Romans 5:2 says that after we have peace with God we rejoice in what?

Answer:   "The hope of the of ."

God’s glory is His character.  We can read that in Exodus 33- 34. We rejoice in the hope of His glory -- His character.  In other words, we have hope that God’s glory -- His character -- will be formed in us by faith as we rejoice in the gospel and in the righteousness of Christ!  Reaching character perfection is not the means to gain salvation!  Some people worry about being perfect so that God will save them!  Yes, God wants us to overcome sin! Yes, He wants us to obtain perfection of character.  But does He want us to do that so that we can earn our salvation?  No! Character perfection and victory over sin is the fruit of assurance we have in Christ.  It is a result of gaining by faith, peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ!

Hot works, like the fire at Pentecost are works of the Spirit of God.  Cold works, or “dead works” as Paul calls them, are works of the flesh, like when Abraham took Hagar, Sarah’s maid, and tried to have the child of promise through His own efforts!  The “lukewarm” believers Jesus mentions in Revelation 3 are those who mix some hot works of the Spirit with cold works of the flesh.  Outwardly they look like the Spirit is leading them, but inwardly they are trusting in works of the flesh!  Self righteousness was the problem of the Galatians, and it is the problem with many Christians today!  Faith plus works cannot save!  Faith in God’s grace saves!

9.  What does Ephesians 2:8-9 say we are saved by?

Answer:  By received through .

10.  If we try to save ourselves by obedience, we are what, according to Galatians 5:4?

Answer:  fallen from .

It is not our obedience that saves us, but Jesus' perfect obedience lived for us!  See Romans 5:19.  We obey God truly only when we have received His peace in the heart through faith.  Then we are empowered to stand in the faith!  It is then we have a faith that works by love as Galatians 5:6 states!

11.  What did those who followed a legalistic religion do to the apostles, and even to Jesus?  John 16:2.

Answer:  They them and thought they were doing to God!

The fighting, hatred, and variance we see in churches, in professed Christian’s lives, and in nations, is the result of the false gospel, of a religion based on works!  The knowledge of the true gospel will lead to peace with God, and with one another!  In the end of time, people who believe the false gospels will be deceived and enforce the “mark of the beast” on true believers who are obeying God’s commandments from the heart because they love the Lord, and have found true peace with God through Jesus Christ!
