Lesson 29: The Good News about Victory over Sin

We have the victory in JESUS

1.  As we “behold” the beauty and holiness of Jesus’ character, what will happen to us?  2 Corinthians 3:18.

Answer:  We will be into the image.

Ellen G. White, in the book The Desire of Ages, page 311, wrote:

“The tempter’s agency is not to be accounted an excuse for one wrong act.  Satan is jubilant when he hears the professed followers of Christ making excuses for their deformity of character.  It is these excuses that lead to sin. There is no excuse for sinning.  A holy temper, a Christlike life, is accessible to every repenting, believing child of God.”

2.  The Savior was to be called “Yahshua” (transliterated “Jesus” in Koine Greek).  Why was He given this title?  Matthew 1:21.

Fill in:  "....for He shall save His people their ."

Yahshua means Yahweh is salvation.  Jesus came to save us FROM our sins, not IN THEM!  He separates us from them through His power.  We no longer need to wallow around in the slime of sin and despair.  He can lift us from the gutter most to the utter most!

3.  What may the true believer be filled with?  Ephesians 3:19.

Answer:   All the of God.

Read verse 20 also.  Again, in the book The Desire of Ages on page 311, the inspired pen writes these words:

“The plan of redemption contemplates our complete recovery from the power of Satan.  Christ always separates the contrite soul from sin.  He came to destroy the works of the devil, and He has made provision that the Holy Spirit shall be imparted to every repentant soul, to keep him from sinning.”

4. Through Jesus, what can we be?  Romans 8:37.

Answer: than .

5.  Is there any sin or temptation that is too powerful for the Spirit-filled believer to overcome?  1 Corinthians 10:13.

Answer: .

If there were a temptation too powerful for the Lord to give us victory over, then that would mean that the devil is more powerful than Yahweh!  This is absurd!  The devils trembled when they saw Jesus!  He cast them out “with a word.”  He is still able to give us complete victory over any sin!  He will make a “way to escape” for you if you are willing to let Him!

6.  If we abide in Yahshua, what will we NOT do?  1 John 3:6.

Answer:  Commit .

To abide in Jesus means to spend time each day with Him in prayer, and to study His word which is the bread of life we are to live by.  It means attending church for fellowship whenever God’s people meet for study and worship.  In a few more weeks, these lessons will be over.  But your growth in the Lord must not end there!  You must continue to “grow in grace and knowledge.”

Attending prayer meeting each week is important.  Faithfully attend Sabbath school and church service each week, and do your Sabbath school lesson each day.  Read the Spirit of prophecy books, and have a planned devotional time each day.  If you do these things, you will never fail!  See 2 Peter 1:3-11 now.

7.  Who will give you and me the power to walk in the way of holiness?  2 Corinthians 6:16.

Answer: .

8.  What is Jesus ABLE to keep us from doing?  Jude 24.

Answer: into sin.

This verse also says that He has the power to present us “faultless” before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy!

9.  Do we need to cooperate with Jesus in keeping ourselves “pure”?  1 John 3:3 and Romans 6:11-12.

Answer: .

We are told to NOT LET sin reign in us, and we are to RECKON ourselves to be dead as far as sin is concerned.  This takes daily conscious effort on our part to surrender ourselves to the Lord each and every day!

10. What does our Lord KNOW how to do for us?  2 Peter 2:9.

Answer: He knows how to deliver us out of .

11.  What can we do through the power of the Messiah working in us?  Philippians 4:13.

Answer: things.

12.  What about our thoughts?  Can the Holy Spirit even purify them?  2 Corinthians 10:4-5.

Answer:  .

We can pull down Satan’s strongholds of temptation and cast down any evil imaginations!  But we must cooperate by following the advice found in Philippians 4:8-9.   See that text now.

What goes around comes around.  Garbage in = garbage out!  Pure thoughts in = pure thoughts out!  Choose carefully and the Lord will bless you with spiritual victories and a holy, Christlike character!

13. What will Yahweh give us power to “will and to do”? Philippians 2:13.

Answer: His .

He is the One who will give us the POWER we need to WILL and to DO His will!  Victory over sin is a fringe benefit of knowing Jesus and the power of His resurrection and ongoing ministry for us in the heavenly sanctuary.  Overcoming sin does not save us. We are already “accepted in the Beloved” right now!  Remember that it is HIS obedience that saves us, not ours!  See Romans 5:19.   But the Lord does not want us to live a life of spiritual failure when all power is available to us!

We may fall into sin, but that does not mean that we are cast off and forsaken!  See 1 John 2:1.   Our heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus, and the Holy Spirit want us to be victorious over sin for our good.  The power IS available!  But be careful that you do not fall into the trap of trying to be good enough for God to love you by your works!   That is the basis of every pagan religion.  He already loves you.  Calvary proves that beyond a shadow of a doubt!

14.  Are you willing to allow the Holy Spirit to control your life and give you the power to will and to do of His good pleasure?

Answer: .

Have you made your decision to become a member of God’s remnant church? If not, what is holding you back? Jesus will help you through every difficulty and objection! He loves you with an everlasting love! Won’t you trust Him for the strength and grace to follow Him all the way?
