Lesson 28: The Good News about Baptism |
![]() |
The Spirit of God Descended as a Dove. Matthew 3:16 |
We believe every believer that has the opportunity ought to be baptized
as a public expression of their inward experience of conversion and
forgiveness of sins. Baptism is to be by complete immersion in water as
clearly taught in the Scriptures.
1. What does baptism symbolize?
Romans 6:3-4.
Answer: It symbolizes the and
of Jesus Christ,
and also the death of our self, and the
new life we have in .
Baptism symbolizes our death
to the old sinful self. When we enter
the "watery grave" we are showing
that our old self of sin is dead in
Christ by faith. When we come up
out of the water, we illustrate the fact
that we have newness of life in Christ
Jesus! Just as Jesus was raised
from the dead by the power of God,
so we by that same Holy Spirit power
are new creatures in Christ! That is
why only baptism by complete burial
in water is biblical! Also note that the
Lord gave baptism as a memorial of
the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. He did not give Sunday
worship as that memorial as some
say!
2. What have those who have been
baptized into Christ put on?
Galatians 3:27.
Answer: .
At baptism a person begins a
new life in Jesus. This life will be
patterned after the life of Jesus. He
will dwell in the believer and the
believer will “put on” the character of
the Savior!
3. After the Ethiopian eunuch
understood the plan of salvation,
what question did he ask Phillip?
Acts 8:36.
Fill in: "See, here is water, what doth
me to be ?"
This is a very important
question that everyone who has
believed in Jesus ought to ask
themselves! Don’t let anything
“hinder” you from being baptized!
4. What was Phillip's answer to the
eunuch?
Acts 8:37.
Answer: "If thou with all thine , thou ."
At this point in our studies
together you have heard and studied
all the necessary truths of the Bible. If you have truly believed them in
your heart, then you are ready to be baptized!
5. Jesus was not a sinner. He did
not need to be baptized as a symbol
of the washing away of His sins. Why
then was He baptized?
Matthew 3:13-17.
Answer: He said He did it to fulfill all .
He was doing it as an example
for us to follow. See 1 John 2:6.
6. What does a person receive at his
or her baptism?
Acts 2:37-38.
Answer: The
of the .
It is at baptism that the Holy
Spirit confirms the person's
commitment to Christ. It is then that
the person receives the gift of the Spirit! As a result of the Holy
Spirit's
presence in the life, "the
manifestations of the Spirit is given to
every man." See I Corinthians 12:7.
These manifestations of the Holy Spirit are the gifts that the Spirit gives to every believer "dividing to every man severally as He will." 1 Corinthians 12:11. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 and Romans 12:5-8. At your baptism you may receive one or more of these spiritual gifts! They are listed below:
It is the Holy Spirit who determines
what gifts you will receive. These
gifts are not revocable. See Romans
11:29. The gifts are given for the
purpose of building up the church and
spreading the everlasting gospel! The gifts of the Spirit are never given
to glorify or edify self, but rather, to
glorify Yahweh our heavenly Father
and to finish His work of proclaiming
the gospel!
7. What must precede baptism in
order for it to be a true regenerating
experience? See
Acts 2:37
again.
Answer: .
This is one reason why the
Bible does not recognize infant
baptism. An infant does not have the
mind capacity to “repent and be
baptized.” The rich spiritual
experience necessary for baptism
cannot be had by an infant and the
public stand for Christ has no
meaning at infant baptism. Baptizing
an Infant would be like a husband
having a preacher come and marry
him to his fiancé while she is sound
asleep! Such an act loses its
meaning for the one not mentally
ready to absorb it! The devil has deceived millions of people regarding
this matter! Those who were
baptized while infants were never
really baptized according to the Bible
example. They are deceived if they
believe that they have been baptized! They need to be baptized according
to the Bible mode of baptism.
8. What did Jesus say ‘He that
believeth and is baptized’ will be?
Mark 16:16.
Answer: .
The Savior said that ‘he that
believeth not shall be damned.’ He
said this in the context of baptism. Baptism is not an ‘option,’ but rather
it is a divine command from the Son
of God! There are situations where a
person might not be able to be
baptized as was the case of the thief
on the cross. But if the thief were able
to come down from the cross, no
doubt he would have obeyed his
Savior by being baptized!
9. In the ‘name’ of what three
persons did Jesus say we are to be
baptized?
Matthew 28:19.
Answer: The , the
, and the
.
This verse clearly shows that
there are three divine Persons in the
Godhead called ‘Elohim’ as we have
studied in lesson 3. The word ‘name’
is in the singular and not the plural. This indicates that the three persons
belong to ONE Elohim or Godhead. Also note that Jesus did not instruct
anyone to be baptized in His name
only as is done in many Protestant
evangelical churches. He clearly
says that baptism must be done in
the name of the three Persons of the
Godhead.
10. What should a person who is
baptized be taught and what promise
does the child of God have about
Jesus’ presence with him or her?
Matthew 28:20.
Fill in: "Teaching them to things whatsoever I have you; and lo, I am with you , even unto the of the world."
In obedience to the Savior's
words, you have been taught ‘all
things whatsoever’ the Lord
commanded you! That is the purpose
of these studies you have been
doing. The day may come when the
Lord uses you to also share His great
saving truths with others!
11. Can those who have already
been baptized by immersion, but who
did not really understand vital Bible
truths be rebaptized?
Acts 19:1-5.
Answer: .
These people in the verses we just read had never heard about the
Holy Spirit. They had been baptized
in the name of the Father only. They
now needed to be rebaptized in the
‘name of Jesus.’ Some teachers use
this text to ‘prove’ we should be
baptized in the name of Jesus only. But remember that these people were
already baptized in the name of
Yahweh (the Father), and since they
were now learning about the Holy
Ghost and Jesus they were rebaptized. But Jesus’ command in
Matthew 28:19 concerning baptism
takes precedence over all! His direct
words are clear and authoritative
regarding the names we are to use at
baptism. All other texts concerning
baptism must be viewed in the light of
Jesus’ own clear command concerning the subject.
Rebaptism should be only in cases
where there was severe apostasy,
open violation of God’s
commandments, or for those who
never understood vital Scripture
truths. Some who were baptized in
other churches or by ministers who
either did not know, or openly
opposed God’s laws and Bible truths
should also be rebaptized as the
people In Paul’s day did when they
learned new vital truth!
12. Did Jesus indicate that water
baptism was extremely Important?
John 3:5.
Answer: .
The word ‘water’ In this verse
is a clear allusion to water baptism as
many Bible commentators agree.
13. How many kinds of baptism does
the Bible recognize?
Ephesians 4:4-5.
Answer: .
The Bible does not recognize
many forms of baptism, but rather
ONE form, and that is the biblical
form of baptism of adult believers by
total immersion in water!
14. What is the Lord saying to all who
have never been baptized?
Acts 22:16.
Acts
22:16.
Fill in: "And now why thou? Arise,
and be , and wash away thy sins, calling on
the of the
."
15. Now that you have studied some very important Scripture truths, do you desire to
be baptized?
Answer: .
![]()
It is advisable that you be baptized before you finish these series of lessons
because you need to also be studying after you are baptized. It is then that you need
continued study in the word. The rest of the lessons in this series are for your
spiritual growth in grace and knowledge. But what you already have studied is all
you need to know to make a decision for baptism NOW! If you would like to talk to a
Seventh-day Adventist pastor about this matter, ask the one sharing this study with
you to arrange it. May the Lord bless you as you pray about this important matter!
Also, if you have not yet begun
attending a Seventh-day Adventist
Church regularly on Sabbaths, why
not begin this coming Sabbath? The
truths you have been learning from
God’s word will only benefit you as
you begin to put them into effect in
your life and home. No one will ever
regret serving God and obeying His
word, rather, many will regret that
they failed to do that when the Holy
Spirit had convicted them to do so!
