Lesson 24: The Good News about Righteousness |
![]() |
The Bible teaches that justification or saving righteousness comes by faith in what Jesus has done on Calvary's cross. It is impossible for man to make himself righteous, or for man to save himself. By faith he must accept the righteousness of Christ on his behalf, and by faith the sinner is then declared righteous. This is imputed righteousness. Then as the forgiven sinner continues in a relationship with the Messiah, he or she is given ‘imparted’ righteousness through the power of the Holy Spirit, enabling him or her to form a character progressively more and more like the Savior’s. |
1. How do we receive Christ’s righteousness? Philippians 3:7-9.
Answer: By .
2. It is not our obedience that saves us, because our obedience is imperfect.
Whose obedience credited to us makes us righteous?
Romans 5:19.
Answer: By "one Man’s many shall be made ."
![]()
That one Man is Jesus, God’s Son! It is Jesus our Savior whose obedience
credited to the repentant sinner makes us righteous!
3. When we begin to do all the things God commands us to do, what should
we consider ourselves?
Luke 17:7-10.
Answer: Just .
![]()
We should have been obeying our heavenly Father all along! The fact that
we finally have started now earns us no merit as far as righteousness is
concerned!
We have nothing to boast about at all!
4. What are we NOT saved by?
Titus 3:5.
Answer:
by
that we have .
5. But what does the same verse tell us we ARE saved by?
Answer: God’s .

Ellen White, who Seventh-day Adventists believe was an inspired writer as we
have already studied, wrote the following on the subject of righteousness by
faith:
“If you would gather together everything that is good and holy
and noble and lovely in man and then present the subject to the angels of God as
acting a part in the salvation of the human soul or in merit, the proposition
would be rejected as treason ... and any works that man can render to God will be
far LESS than NOTHINGNESS.
My requests are made acceptable only because they are laid upon Christ’s
righteousness.
The idea of doing anything to merit the grace of pardon is fallacy from beginning
to end.
'Lord, in my hand no price I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling.'” -- Faith &
Works, p.24.
6. How does our "righteousness" appear in God’s sight?
Isaiah 64:6.
Answer: Like .
![]()
If our ‘righteousness’ is ‘filthy rags’ in God’s sight, can you imagine
how our unrighteousness is in His sight!
7. Who is our ‘righteousness’?
Jeremiah 23:6.
Answer: The is!
![]()
Grace has been described as ‘unmerited favor.’ We do not deserve to be
saved. Rather, because of our sins, we deserve the death penalty because
the ‘wages of sin is death’!
But because of God’s grace and mercy, we are forgiven and pardoned because Jesus
willingly paid the penalty for our sins!
Because of that, we can walk away free from the condemnation of the law!
8. We have been
by God’s grace through the that is in
Christ Jesus.
Romans 3:24.
![]()
Salvation is a FREE gift of God. We cannot pay for this unspeakable
gift!
If we could pay for it, it would cease to be a gift and would be considered our
wages or just desserts!
But we have nothing in which to pay for even a drop of blood from the veins of
our heavenly Father’s own Son!
See
Psalm 49:7-8.
9. What were the Jews in Paul’s day IGNORANT OF? Romans 10:3.
Answer: God’s .
10. As a result, what mistake did they make?
Same verse.
Answer: They tried to establish their own
.
![]()
There are many today who are trying to ‘establish their own righteousness’ and
are just as ‘ignorant’ of the Savior’s righteousness that is offered as a free
gift as the Jews in Paul’s day were.
11. If we hope to attain ‘righteousness’ by the works of the law, what will
happen?
Romans 9:31-32.
Answer: We will .
![]()
If we try to save ourselves by our own self-righteousness, we will surely
stumble. The law of God was not given for the purpose of saving us but rather to
show us how we have sinned and are in need of being saved!
We must be very careful though that we do not fall into the grievous error so
prevalent in Christianity today that the Law of God is no longer binding, or that
we can ignore it and still be
acceptable in God’s sight. Never forget that transgression of Yahweh’s moral
laws is sin, and willful disobedience that is unrepented of will cause the
transgressor to forfeit eternal life!
Paul warned us not to be deceived about this matter! See 1 Corinthians
6:9-10.
God requires holiness from those who have taken the free salvation He has richly
provided.
The Savior’s righteousness is never given as license to sin or to live a life of
disobedience to God’s law!
The correct relationship between law and grace is the ‘looking glass’ illustration
used by the apostle James in chapter 1, verses 22-25 of his epistle.
This was also mentioned in the lesson we did about the law of God. We look
into the mirror of God’s law so that we can see the grime of sin on our
faces.
The looking glass however, is not able to clean the dirt of sin off our
faces.
We need the “soap” of the blood of Christ to do that! But we are still expected
to keep our faces clean after we have washed, therefore, we need to keep the
mirror nearby!
We do not break the mirror! Law and grace go hand in hand in the plan of
salvation.
12. Christ is the "end of the law" for what?
Romans 10:4.
Answer: .
![]()
The word translated "end" in the above verse is better translated "goal".
The "goal" or "end" purpose of the Ten Commandments is to lead us to the Savior who
forgives us of our sins. In James 5:11, the word "end" is used in the same
way and has the same meaning as in the above text.
The Law is designed to show us our sins and lead us to the Savior!
13. What if we sin AFTER we have received Jesus Christ as our Personal
Savior?
1 John 2:1.
Answer: We need not be discouraged because we have an with the , Jesus Christ -- the righteous One.
![]()
God’s will for us is that we stop sinning through the power of the Holy
Spirit.
This verse shows us that we can have victory over sin because the Lord gives us
power to do His will, and His will is that we "sin not"!
But if we are duped into breaking God’s laws, we have Jesus acting as
our “Advocate" or
"Lawyer" pleading on our behalf in heaven! He will forgive us
as long as we have true repentance, and He will cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
14. What is Jesus doing right now in the heavenly Sanctuary?
Hebrews 8:1-3.
Answer: He is acting as our .
![]()
There is a temple in heaven which the sanctuary of Moses’ time was modeled after.
Jesus is still acting as our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary.
One day His work will cease, and He will return as "King of Kings” and "Lord of
Lords"!
At that time it will be too late for those who neglect to put on the robe of
Christ’s righteousness!
The time to do that is NOW!
15. If we "confess” our sin, what will our heavenly High Priest do?
1 John 1:9.
Fill In: "If we confess our sins, He is
and
to
us our
and to
us from all ."
16. What does the Lord cover us with?
Isaiah 61:10.
Answer: His
of .
17. What are we “justified” by? And what are we saved from having to
feel?
Romans 5:8-9.
Answer: We are justified by Jesus’ ,
and we are saved from having to feel the
of .
18. Where sin "abounds” in our life, what abounds even more to us?
Romans 5:20.
Answer: God’s .
![]()
No matter how sinful your life may have been; if you allow it, God’s grace
and forgiveness will "abound” even more because you need it more!
He will totally change your life for the better. His righteousness is free
and available to everyone who calls on His name in sincerity!
19.
Romans 10:10
tells us that with the man believes unto
and with the
confession is made that results in .
20. Have you accepted Jesus' robe of righteousness to cover your filthy
rags?
Do you know that your sins have been forgiven and that you would have eternal
life should you die this moment?
Answer: .
If you answered "yes" to the above question, Praise the Lord! If you
answered
"no," why not let your Bible instructor lead you in the simple prayer
of faith to receive Christ as your personal Savior right now!
See
Romans 10:9 and
1 John 5:12-13.
