Lesson 15: The Good News about Keeping the Sabbath Holy

Make Time for Jesus!
We believe that obeying the fourth commandment regarding the seventh-day Sabbath means more than just going to church on that day. True Sabbath keeping is an experience with the Lord and His holiness. The Word of God gives us some guidelines concerning Sabbath observance.

1. What are we commanded to refrain from on the Sabbath day? Exodus 20:8-11.

Answer: .

The Lord forbids us to do any work during the holy hours of the Sabbath. This refers to ordinary work to earn wages. Under no circumstances are we to take a job or position that causes us to work during the hours of the Sabbath. To do so would cause us to be transgressors of God’s law! As far as possible, the command also tells us to make sure that our children and guests who live with us observe the Sabbath. We should never hire anyone to work for us on the Sabbath day, for those whom we hire are acting as our "manservants" or "maidservants." For this reason, we ought not to go to service stations, restaurants or like places on the Sabbath unless it is an absolute emergency.

2. Who did our heavenly Father say would be the ones He will bring to His “holy mountain”? Isaiah 56:6-7.

Answer: Those who do not His , and take hold of His .

3. What three things does the Lord NOT want us to do on the Sabbath day? Isaiah 58:13-14.

Answer: "NOT doing our own and NOT finding our own and NOT speaking our own ."

The Sabbath is special time to be with our heavenly Father, His Son our Savior, and to enjoy sweet communion with Them through the Holy Spirit. The Sabbath hours are not a time for us to do what we want, or to seek our own pleasures, or talk about things that are not conducive to the sprit of the Sabbath. From sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday night we are to make sure that we keep the holy appointment with our God!

4. What does the Lord want us to call His holy Sabbath? Isaiah 58:13.

Answer: A .

If we truly know the Lord as our Savior and Redeemer, we will never look upon the holy hours of the Sabbath as a hindrance to our lifestyle! We will not anxiously wait for it to be over. Rather, we will call it a "delight" and honor Yahweh our Father by joyfully keeping His Sabbath holy!

5. What does the Bible call Friday, the day before the Sabbath? Luke 23:54.

Answer: The day.

Friday is the day we are to prepare for the Sabbath. We are to make sure that the car is filled with gas, the clothes are cleaned and pressed, the housework is done, the toys are put away, the shoes are polished, the dishes are done, etc. The careful believer will never be caught by surprise when the Sabbath arrives on Friday night! Rather, he and his family will be ready to welcome it with worship and song!

6. What did Yahweh say ought to be done on Friday regarding our food preparation? Exodus 16:23.

The word ‘seethe’ means "to cook by boiling." We are to make sure that the Sabbath dinner is prepared and ready to be heated up if necessary on the Sabbath. The holy hours of the Sabbath are not a time to do baking and cooking from scratch. Wives as well as their husbands are to have rest on the Sabbath day!

7. Besides resting from work on the Sabbath day, what does the fourth commandment also tell us we are to do on the other six days? Exodus 20:9.

Fill in: "Six days shalt thou ".

The Sabbath commandment also tells us that we are to “labor” the other six days of the week! Our heavenly Father does not want us to live the life of a sluggard! We are not only to work for our family, but also to work for Him witnessing and doing His work!

8. When the people of Israel were buying and selling on the Sabbath day, what did Nehemiah say they were doing to the Sabbath? Nehemiah 13:15-18.

10. What did Jesus say was "lawful" to do on the Sabbath days? Matthew 12:11-12.

Fill in: “It is lawful to on the Sabbath.”

Acts of mercy and kindness are right on the Sabbath day.  Helping a stranded motorist would be proper on the Sabbath. But we must be careful that we do not try to justify ordinary work for pay or unnecessary work on the Sabbath day. Jesus healed on the Sabbath day because it is right to do acts of mercy on the Sabbath. Although those in the healing field such as doctors and nurses are to do necessary work on the Sabbath, it is not advisable for any to accept regular scheduled Sabbath employment.  Even doctors and nurses should make every effort to have Sabbaths off so that they can gather together for worship and prayer with the people of God. A white uniform does not automatically give anyone a license to ignore the Sabbath command! No Sabbath keeping Christian should have to work on the Sabbath if there are others who do not honor the Sabbath who could work in their place. The Lord will make it possible for us to keep the Sabbath holy if we will but stand firm regarding this matter!

Fill In: They to the of God.

This is one of the main reasons we go to church on the Sabbath day, to fellowship together and hear the Word of God preached! Faith cometh by hearing. See Romans 10:17. If we are not with God’s people on the Sabbath to hear the Word of God, we do not receive added measures of faith. There is a special blessing that is received only when we meet together as the Lord commands!

13. What will those who honor the Sabbath “ride” on? Isaiah 58:13-14.

Answer: The of the earth.

Those who really know the Savior and their heavenly Father and have received of the Holy Spirit will have a HIGH TIME on the Sabbath day! They will enter into a special Sabbath day experience when their family will spiritually join with the Family in heaven! The cares of every day life will be set aside and a special appointment with the King of Kings will be kept. Those who love Yahweh and His Son our Savior and savor the Holy Spirit’s blessing will love to spend time with Them on the holy Sabbath day!

There are many things we can do on the Sabbath day that will help to make it a special delight for the whole family. Special Sabbath day deserts can be made for the family. Christian videos can be shown in the afternoon or evening. Children enjoy nature walks with other children.  This offers a great opportunity to fellowship with other church families. Visiting friends and family members or those who perhaps never get visitors (nursing home residents, etc.) also helps make the Sabbath a delight! There are lots of things that we can do on the Sabbath that will make the day a real delight for us, our loved ones, and for others. The sky’s the limit if you think about it a little!

16. What does Leviticus 23:32. say we should do from “even unto even”?

Answer:   your Sabbath.

We are to “celebrate” the Sabbath day! It is not to be a day of gloom and misery! “The JOY of the Lord is our strength.” Nehemiah 8:10. Any time spent in the Savior’s presence is joyful time for those who know Him as Lord and Savior!

17. What is the title of Psalm 92?

Answer: "A for the day."

This Psalm begins with the words “It is a GOOD THING to give thanks unto Yahweh.” The Sabbath is a time to return thanks unto our heavenly Father for all He has done and IS doing for us! With song and praise we are to come close to the Lord every day and especially on the Sabbath day!

The Sabbath is also a time for special family worships.
