Lesson 13: The Good News about Conviction
1. What three things will the Holy Spirit CONVICT the world of? John 16:8.

Answer: , , and .

God’s Holy Spirit uses CONVICTION to impress the world about what sin is, and about what righteousness is, and about judgment! Without the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, no one can be brought to a decision for the Lord. Conviction is really the voice of God speaking to the conscience!

2. Under the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, what did the jailor ask Paul and Silas in Acts 16, verse 30?

Answer: "Sirs, must I to be .

The convicting power of the Holy Spirit caused the jailor to ask how he could be saved. Conviction may manifest itself in many different forms. There may be a demonstration of anger because a person might not want to give up a secret sin! Tears may be another manifestation of the convicting power of God! As you do these lessons, God’s Spirit may reveal something to you in His loving way that brings tears to your eyes, be they tears of joy at the realization of God’s truth, or tears of sadness and remorse as you realize how your course may have hurt God and others. A sense of guilt may also be the work of God’s Holy Spirit convicting you! Never fight this work of conviction!

Never become angry at the person that may be sharing God’s Word with you, or the preacher preaching it! If it is in the Word of God, and you resist it, you are fighting God, not the messenger when you reject the convicting power of His Spirit! Rather pray for strength and will to follow God’s way!

3. What did Peter do when God’s Holy Spirit convicted him? Luke 22:62.

Answer: He went out and .

Besides weeping, and the other manifestations we have mentioned, there are other indications that the Spirit of God is working on the heart in convicting power.

Having many objections jump into your mind when you’re learning new truth, telling others what you are learning, being nervous or excited or restless and fidgety when new truth is studied may be indications that you are under the convicting power of God! It is important to understand when God's Spirit is convicting so that you can react appropriately using the Word of God as the test.

You have heard of the saying “Strike while the iron is hot?” This is especially true when making decisions for the Lord and His truth! If we do not decidedly apply truths we are learning to our hearts, if when God’s Spirit is at work we continually resist, and if we fail to act upon the weight of clear evidence from the Word of God, we may pass on without identifying ourselves with Christ! The golden opportunity may pass, and we may go farther and farther away from Christ and never take our stand on the Lord’s side!

4. What Bible character ignored too long the convicting power of God’s Spirit? Judges 16:20-22.

Answer: .

Samson knew better. But he ignored God’s voice too long! The convictions of God’s Spirit gradually wore away until Samson could no longer feel guilty for violating the revealed will of God! Each time we fight the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, it makes it harder to be convicted the second time!

5. What did Paul say happened to the consciences of the people he mentioned in his letter to Timothy? 1 Timothy 4:1-2.

Answer: Their conscience was as with a .

These men had ignored God’s convicting power so long it was as if their conscience was burned, and the tender fibers of moral wisdom were no longer operating! How dangerous this is! Let’s allow the Lord to convict us of sin and of righteousness, and of judgment so that we can ask for forgiveness and power to be more than conquerors through Jesus Christ!

6. When the Holy Spirit was working on Peter’s heart at the lake, and Jesus came close to him, what did Peter say? Luke 5:8.

Answer: from me, for I am a man, O Lord.”

Peter really didn’t want Jesus to leave Him! He just felt his sinfulness in the presence of the Lord of Glory! This is the work of God’s convicting Spirit! Jesus knows we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God! But He loves us anyway, and He is ready to forgive us!

Have you followed a wrong course in the past? Are you presently following one? Has God’s Holy Spirit been working on your conscience? Ask the Lord to forgive you! He will, you know, and He will give you power to gain the victory!

7. What did Jesus say He would give us power to become? John 1:12.

Answer: The of .

The right response is to obey God’s Word and His law! Let’s not let traditions of the past, or anything else cause us to turn away from Jesus! He convicts us only to save us! If we follow God’s Word we will never go wrong!

The devil is also at work at the same time the Holy Spirit is! He wants to stop you from studying your Bible, and from discovering all of God’s truth! Don’t let him do this to you! Keep studying God’s Word. The Holy Spirit will let you recognize and discern what is truth and what is error! See John 16:13.

8. Why were the Pharisees afraid to leave their comfortable synagogues and follow Jesus? John 12:42-43.

Answer: Because they the of men more than the of .

Even though God’s Spirit convicts us as to what we should do, we still have to choose to act upon our convictions for the Lord! The Pharisees chose the easy way, and worried more about what their fellow church members thought than what God thought! By God’s grace, may that never be said of us!

9. Does the Bible say that light (truth) will grow brighter and brighter as the world draws closer to the perfect day of the Lord’s appearing and the setting up of His kingdom? Proverbs 4:18.

Answer: .

You are learning truths that perhaps none of your ancestors have studied! The truth of God advances more and more as we near the day of the Lord! That is why it is so important to let the Holy Spirit working through the Word of God show us the truth for the days we live in!

10. What did the Publican say when the Spirit of God convicted him of his sin? Luke 18:13.

Answer: "God, be to me, a ."

The Publican was convicted of his sins (his breaking of God’s law! See 1 John 3:4.)    He asked the Lord to have mercy on him. The Pharisee in the story was satisfied with his religion, and the Lord’s Spirit could not convict him because of his self-righteousness. Jesus said that the publican, the one whose conscience was tender to the convicting power of the Holy Spirit, was the one who went home “justified”! See verse 14 of the chapter.
