Lesson 10: The Good News about the Law of God

The Bible teaches that a person who has received Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord will have the law written on the heart by the Holy Spirit. This is the NEW COVENANT.  God’s Ten Commandment law of love is now the Christian’s standard of right living as lived by Jesus. Unrepentant sinners live under condemnation of the law because of unbelief, self centered, lawlessness and rebellion.

1.  What is sin?  1 John 3:4.

Answer: Sin is the of the .

Sin is breaking God’s law of love, and breaking God’s heart. Those who say that the law is done away with must also say that there is no more sin, because sin is breaking God’s law! Only a fool would say there is no more sin in the world, or that there is no more law to be obeyed!

2. What was the devil from the “beginning”?  John 8:44.

Answer: He was a and a .

The law of Yahweh was transgressed by the fallen angel. Lucifer sinned from the beginning. Since “sin is the transgression of the law,” we know that Satan is opposed to Yahweh’s righteous laws. He seeks to lead mankind to disobey them!

3. How does the devil feel about those who KEEP God’s commandments?  Revelation 12:17.

Answer: He is with them!

The reverse of this is that the devil is pleased with those who break any one of God’s commandments! He knows that the obedient will keep themselves from sin and death, and from his deceptions and temptations!

4. Did the Ten Commandments exist long before the time of Moses when God wrote them on the tables of stone?  Genesis 26:5.

Answer: .

The law of Ten Commandments is a transcript of the character of God. Because of this fact, they can never be abrogated or changed because God does not change! The law is “holy, and just, and good.” (Romans 7:12). And so is the Law Giver who gave them!

5. If we really LOVE Jesus, what will we do?  John 14:15.

Answer: His .

His commandments are the same as His Father’s commandments. He said, “I and My Father are ONE.” See John 10:30.

6. What did James say we would be guilty of if we broke any one of God’s commandments?  James 2:10-12.

Answer: He that breaks is of breaking them !

If we are hanging from a chain of ten links, and one of the links breaks, we will fall. It doesn’t matter which link it is that breaks! In the same way, if we break any one of God’s Ten Commandments, we will fall into sin!

7. What kind of a mind would be against God’s holy laws?  Romans 8:7.

Answer: The mind.

It is the “carnal” or “flesh centered” mind that is at odds with the Ten Commandments. The born-again believer has the “mind of Christ.” See 1 Corinthians 2:16. The mind of Christ delighted in keeping His Father’s commandments! See John 5:15-19.

8. What did Jesus say those who disobeyed any of the commandments would be called?  Matthew 5:15-19.

Answer: in the kingdom of God.

The word translated “least” literally means “as nothing” or “non-existent”! Sinners will not enter the kingdom of God!

9. Under the “New Covenant,” rather than the law being done away with, where is the law written?  Hebrews 10:16.

Answer:  Instead of on tables of stone, they are written in the and of the believer.

10. In Acts 15:5, what did the Pharisees say was “needful” for the Gentile believers to do?

Answer: Be .

11. What law was circumcision a part of according to the same verse?

Answer: The law of .

The law of circumcision was part of the ceremonial law that pointed forward to Christ. It was ceremonial in nature and included special holy days that were called “sabbaths,” and also contained detailed instructions about sacrifices and oblations. These laws were not part of the Ten Commandments and were never written on the tablets of stone, but were written in the “book of the law.” See Deuteronomy 31:26.

12. Did Paul make a distinction between the ceremonial law which included circumcision and the moral law of the Ten Commandments which will be in effect forever?  1 Corinthians 7:19.

Answer: .

Circumcision, as well as the ceremonies and sacrifices, “the shadows of things to come,” were abolished, nailed to the cross. See Colossians 2:16-17.

Jesus was the reality to which these laws pointed. They were temporary, and now they are no longer needed or useful. God’s changeless MORAL LAW of love embodied in the Ten Commandments is eternal. The Ten Commandments describes the righteousness we always receive as we believe His New Covenant promises. See Hebrews 8:10.

Never will it be okay to worship idols, use Yahweh’s name in vain, break the Sabbath, disobey our parents, kill, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, or covet our neighbor’s possessions!

The OLD COVENANT was Israel’s futile promise to obey God’s laws by human effort. Their failure was immediate and inevitable.   “All that the Lord has spoken, we will do!” they promised. Obedience to God’s moral law can ONLY be experienced by those who receive the gift of the Holy Spirit through faith in Christ.

13. What is the “love of God”?  1 John 5:3.

Answer: This is the love of God that we His .

14. Because we are saved by “grace” and are no longer “under” the condemnation of the law, does that mean that we are now free to break God’s law and sin? Romans 6:14-15.

Answer: .

Remember that “sin is the transgression of the law”!

15. After we have been forgiven, what does Jesus want us to do? John 8:11.

Answer: Go and .

Since sin is the “transgression of the law,” what Jesus in essence was saying to the woman He had forgiven was, “Go, and don’t break My Father’s commandments any more!”

That command is still in effect for all who have been forgiven by the merits and atonement of Jesus Christ! We are to live a life in obedience to God’s commandments!

16.  John 15:10 tells us that Jesus His Father’s .

17. If we really “know” Jesus, what will we do? 1 John 2:6.

Answer: as He .

The Christian life is a LIFE OF GODLY LOVE, in JOYFUL OBEDIENCE to God’s commandments. Its goal of life is to be more like Jesus!  Jesus did not “sin.” That means that He did not transgress any of His Father’s commandments. He wants you and me to live in a similar way. He wants us to be ONE with Him and His Father.

18. What do we find in Exodus 20:1-20.?

Answer: The .

19.  Who has the “right” to enter into the gates of the “New Jerusalem”?  Revelation 22:14. (KJV).

Answer: Those who His .

20. What will the “unrighteous” NOT inherit?  1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

Answer: The of .

Paul mentions at least four of the Ten Commandments in these two verses! Obviously, he did not believe the relatively modern error that grace nullified the need for obeying God’s moral laws!

21. What did James compare the law of God to?  James 1:23-25.

Answer: A .

A mirror or a looking glass can show us the dirt on our face, but a mirror or looking glass cannot clean the dirt off! The law of God reveals to us what sin is, but the law can never cleanse us from sin. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can do that! (1 John 1:7). But after we wash our face, we still need the mirror to show us when we get dirty. We don’t “break” the mirror after we wash our face, do we? Neither can we safely throw out God’s holy laws! We still NEED the law to tell us when we have sinned.

22. Are you willing to let the Holy Spirit write God’s laws in your heart, and allow Him to give you the power and will to lovingly obey these laws?
