We learned that the head of gold represented the kingdom of Babylon, and that the chest and arms of silver represented the Medo-Persian Kingdom that followed Babylon.  Then after the Medo-Persian kingdom, the kingdom of Greece followed, which was represented by the stomach and thighs of brass in the king’s dream.   Then followed the iron legs which represented the Roman Empire.   The toes of iron and clay represented the nations of modern Europe which developed as a result of the breakup of the Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries.   Finally, we learned how the rock that struck the image on the feet and turned it to dust and blew it away, and which became a great mountain that filled the whole earth, represented the Rock Jesus Christ who will soon come and establish His kingdom!

Well, today we are going to study the prophecy of Daniel chapter 7, which follows the same sequence of kingdoms, but which gives us insight into some important details regarding the religious kingdom of Papal Rome that was established after pagan Rome’s fall.

1. In his vision, what did Daniel see “strive” on the great sea?  Daniel 7:1-2.

Winds represent strife in Bible prophecy.  Psalm 65:7,  Isaiah 17:12-14,  Jeremiah 4:12-13,  etc.

2. In Bible prophecy, what does the “sea” represent?  Revelation 17:15.

So what Daniel saw was great political strife taking place upon the sea of humanity from which four kingdoms developed!

3. What came up from this sea that Daniel saw?  Daniel 7:3.

Answer: great .


These represent the four great kingdoms that affected God’s covenant people.   They are the same kingdoms represented by the metals of the statue of Daniel chapter 2.   But now, instead of metals, the Lord uses beasts to represent these kingdoms.

4. What was the first beast like?  Verse 4.

Answer:   A with .


The lion with wings was a well known figure in ancient Babylon. In fact, the walls of the city, parts of which are still standing, have these images on them!   The lion represented Babylon as did the head of gold on the statue of Daniel 2.   The man’s heart represented King Nebuchadnezzar, the great king of Babylon.   The fact that the wings were plucked may represent the decline of this empire in the latter years.

5.  What was the second beast that Daniel saw in his vision represented as?  Verse 5 of Daniel 7.

This beast represents the Medo-Persian Empire, which followed Babylon in world history.  The Medes and the Persians were cruel as a bear can be.  The fact that the bear is raised up on one side reflects the fact that one of the two peoples -- the Medes and the Persians that combined together to make up this kingdom -- was stronger than the other.  The bear had “three ribs in the mouth of it.”   This represents the three kingdoms of Babylon, Lydia and Egypt that were “devoured” by the Medo-Persian Empire!

6. What was the third beast that Daniel saw in his vision described as?  Verse 6.

Answer:   A with four and four .


This beast represented the Grecian Empire of Alexander the Great.   A leopard is already a swift animal, but a leopard with wings would be extremely fast!   What an accurate description of the rapid expansion of the Grecian Empire of Alexander!   In a few short years he conquered the world!   In fact, while just in his twenties, Alexander lamented that there were no more worlds left to conquer!   Alexander died from a drunken fever at the young age of 32.   Before he died, he told his generals that the kingdom would go to the strongest.   This resulted in the breakup of the Alexandrine Empire of Greece into four parts represented by the four heads the leopard had!   How accurate is God’s word which tells us history in advance!   This prophecy was written centuries before the actual events took place!

7. How did Daniel describe the fourth beast he saw in his vision?  Daniel 7:7.

Answer:   “dreadful and and exceedingly; and it had great ..."


This fourth dreadful beast with the “iron teeth” corresponds to the same kingdom represented by the iron legs of the statue of Daniel chapter 2.   It represents the Roman Empire, which followed Greece in world history.  The mighty Roman Empire did devour, break in pieces and stamp down all its enemies!

8.  How many “horns” did this fourth beast have?  Verse 7.

Answer: .


These horns represent the ten different kingdoms which resulted from the breakup of the Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries.   It was this breakup of the Roman Empire which gave us the modern nations of Europe we have today!   The horns of this beast correspond to the ten toes of the image of Daniel chapter 2.

9.  What did Daniel see rise up among the ten horns?  Verse 8.

Answer: another .


This ‘little horn’ rose up after the ten horns were already formed.  In other words, it rose after 476 A.D., the date which historians give to the fall of the Roman Empire.  This ‘little horn’ arose among the ten, which means it began in Europe in the latter part of the fourth century!  The prophecy also said that this little horn ‘plucked up by the roots’ three of the ten horns.  There is no other power that could fit this prophecy than the power of Papal Rome, which rose in Europe at this time and through whose influence and decrees resulted in the destruction of three of the ten kingdoms.  These three were the Heruli, the Vandals and the Ostrogoths!

This ‘little horn’ had ‘eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.’  This represents the bishop of Rome -- the ‘Pope’ who rules this little horn religious kingdom that followed Pagan Rome!   In the next lesson we will learn more about the ‘great things’ claimed by the Pontiff of Rome!

10. What did Daniel see being ‘set’ during the rule of the little horn and during the time which he spoke ‘great words?’  Daniel 7:9-11.

Answer:  "... the was set, and the were ."  Verse 10.

At some time during the latter reign of this little horn, God’s judgment in heaven takes place!   In lesson 10 we will learn about the judgment going on in heaven right now!   Verses 13 and 14 describe Jesus coming before the Father during this judgment to receive the kingdom.  This takes place just before He returns to this earth to take possession of all the kingdoms of this world! This is what the rock of Daniel chapter 2 represented!  Praise God that Jesus is coming soon!   Read verses 13 and 14 now.

11. What finally happened to the little horn kingdom?  Verse 11.

Answer: It was and given to the flame.


Daniel saw the future overthrow of the little horn.   In verses 15 through 20, the Bible describes how Daniel was troubled by the things he saw in his vision.   He especially wanted to know about the fourth beast and about the ten horns, especially the little horn with the big mouth!  Read these verses now.

12. What did the ‘little horn’ do to the saints?  Daniel 7:21.

Answer: He against them.


This verse tells us that the little horn would kill many ‘saints’ (those who have accepted Jesus and believe His word).  This is exactly what Papal Rome has done in the centuries past!  50 million Bible believing Christians were put to death during the ‘Dark Ages’ by the Roman Church.  They were called ‘heretics’ because they would not bow to the decrees of Rome.  Millions were burned at the stake, stretched to death on racks, thrown into wells, etc!  You can read about these persecutions in Foxes Book of Martyrs, which you can get at any Christian book store.

13. Who will Jesus give the kingdom to after the heavenly judgment is over?   Verse 22.

14. What does the Bible tell us about the little horn kingdom in Daniel 7:24?

Answer:   He shall be from the other kingdoms, and he shall three kings.

The little horn kingdom of Papal Rome is "diverse" or different from all other kingdoms that came before it!   The others were all political kingdoms, but this one was a religious kingdom that will rule millions till the end of time when it will finally be destroyed by the Lord Jesus!   It is a horse of a different color!

15. What will the little horn "think" to do?  Daniel 7:25.

Answer: "change and ."


The Roman Church has thought to change God’s time of worship from the seventh-day Sabbath to Sunday, the holy day of ancient sun worship!  She has also changed God’s Ten Commandments in her catechism by eliminating the second commandment that forbids image and statue worship and dividing the tenth into two commandments in order to maintain the same number of commandments!  You will learn more about this in the next lesson.

16. During the judgment going on in heaven now, what will be taken away from the Papal horn?   Verse 26.

Dear friends, Jesus will give the kingdom to you and me if we are faithful to Him!  What a great destiny lies before the people of God!  We must cling to Jesus and obey His word and His word alone.  If we do we will not be deceived as millions are!
