Lesson 4: The Good News about God's Love

Amazing Love

1. What did Paul say about God’s love in Ephesians 3:19?

Answer:  God’s love for us .

Paul said God’s love is beyond knowledge!  It is a most amazing thing the way our God loves us!

2.  Can anything stop God from loving us?  Romans 8:35-39.

Answer: .

Regardless of what we have done God loves us! He loves us more than any earthly father or mother could love their child. And His love does not stop because we have sinned, any more than an earthly parent would stop loving their child because he or she did wrong things!  O friend, God loves you so very much!

In the book The Cross and The Switchblade, the author David Wilkerson, a preacher from America’s mid-section with a burden for the gang members in New York City, relates how he went to the ghetto apartment of notorious gang leader Nicky Cruz. Pastor Wilkerson said he had such a burden to tell Nicky Cruz that God loves him that he went to his apartment in the middle of the night and knocked on the door!

Nicky Cruz opened the door and flew into a rage when he saw this preacher whom he despised! He slammed Wilkerson against a wall and put his cane to his throat. “What do you want?” Cruz snarled. The man of God said, “I just came to tell you that God loves you, Nicky Cruz.”

The hardened gang leader never forgot those words, and he eventually accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior! Today Nicky Cruz is an outstanding evangelist who has led thousands to make Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior too! His favorite theme is the love of God for even the most hopeless sinner! God’s love can change the heart like nothing else can!

3.   Jesus is our “Good Shepherd.” What did our Shepherd do for us - His sheep?  John 10:11.

Answer: He His to save us!

The Holy One of Israel, the Son of Yahweh, the One through Whom all things were made, the One Whom angels love to worship and adore, came down to this sin filled speck in the universe! The Father walked down the staircase of heaven with a Baby in His arms! His only begotten Son lived as a man and became acquainted with the hardships and heartaches that are man’s lot.  He lived a perfect life of obedience so that His life could be credited to the account of all who claimed Him as their Savior! Then, to pay the penalty for His straying sheep, He laid down His life on a cruel cross for you and me! The Good Shepherd loves you so very much!  If you but believe what He has done for you, then you will have eternal life!

4. What did the Father of the prodigal son do when he saw his wayward son returning home?  Luke 15:20.

Fill in:  "... when he was a way off, his him, and had , and , and on his , and him”.

Jesus told this story to illustrate how much our heavenly Father loves us!  All of us are sinners.  We have all been prodigal sons. The apostle Paul tells us that while we were enemies, Jesus died for us.  (Romans 5:6-l0 & 18).    God has already given salvation to all, in Jesus (I Timothy 4:10). Praise God! Let’s not throw His gift away!

God’s love is REALLY GOOD NEWS!  The only reason anybody can be lost is by resisting, rejecting, or willfully neglecting God’s love and saving grace.  We are saved by faith!  Unbelief brings condemnation.  (John 3:16-18).

When the sinner hears and believes the pure gospel, he is justified by faith.  By their unbelief the lost willingly negate the salvation Christ has provided for them, and they spurn His love! The Good Shepherd is seeking His lost sheep.  Salvation does not depend upon lost sheep seeking the Shepherd.  He is seeking them!  We are to let Him find us!

5.  What did Jesus do when He saw the sadness on the faces of the family of Lazarus, who had just died?  John 11:35.

Answer: He .

Isaiah the prophet told us that the Messiah would be a “Man of sorrows" and that He would be “acquainted with grief.”   See Isaiah 53:3.  Jesus knows what you go through.   He is aware of your hurts, sorrow, perplexities, and pains!  He wants to bear your griefs and carry your burdens if you will but let Him.  He loves you that much!

6. What did the beloved apostle John say that God is?  1 John 4:8.

Answer:  .

The Godhead of Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the epitome of love!  All love originates and continually flows from them!  Do you love your wife, or children, or mother or father with all your heart?  If so, these feelings of love were put in you by the Father of love!  It is He that created us with the capacity to love.  And He loves us with a love that cannot be measured in human terms!  He loves us even more when we love His Son Whom He sent at infinite cost to save us!  See John 16:27.

7.  What does the well known verse John 3:16 tell us about God’s love for us?

Fill in:  "For God 7a" size="20"> the world that He His begotten that whosoever in Him should not but have ."

God SO LOVED you and me that He gave His Son for us!  Can you imagine that kind of love?  I read the following story in lesson 1 of the New Life Bible Course published by the VOICE OF PROPHECY RADIO PROGRAM.  This true story illustrates God’s love for us.

A frequently traveled railroad bridge spanned a large river. It was the responsibility of one man who lived there with his wife and small child to open and close the bridge, allowing both ships and trains to pass safely.

One evening at dusk, a passenger train was scheduled to cross the bridge.  A few minutes before the train was due, the attendant checked the safety locks as usual to make sure all was ready.  He was shocked to find that the connectors connecting the tracks before the bridge with the tracks on the bridge had been broken by vandals.  Already he heard the train approaching.  What could he do to save the train from disaster?  Throwing himself on the ground beside the tracks, he put all his weight on the bar that controlled the connectors.  The lives of hundreds of people depended on his strength in those tense moments.

Just as he heard the train signal for the right of way on the bridge, he heard another sound that made his heart stand still.  It was his three-year-old son calling through the shadows.  "Daddy, where are you?"  Horrified, he saw his only son wandering down the tracks toward the bridge and the onrushing train.  Already the trestle was trembling.

Should he release the bar and go to save his only child, or should he sacrifice the son he loved and save the lives of hundreds of people who knew nothing of their danger?  He made the only choice he could.  The train passed over the dark waters without the passengers realizing the sacrifice a loving father had made.

Our heavenly Father saw our world rushing on in sin to its eternal ruin.  He knew that he must either give his only Son to save men, women, boys and girls from destruction and death, or save His beloved Son and let a lost world go down to eternal destruction. What did God do?  He did the only thing His love could do as John 3:16 plainly tells us!

8.  What if we are burdened, restless, and troubled with the labors of sin and doubt?   Does Jesus have the solution for this?  Matthew 11:28-30.

Answer: .

A yoke prevents an animal from being torn and bruised by the burden it is pulling.  The yoke evenly distributes the load and makes it bearable.  Jesus wants to give you an easy to wear yoke -- His!  He wants to help you with your heavy load and share the weight with you!  His yoke will prevent you from being torn and bruised with the burdens of this life!  There is rest for you in Jesus!

9.  What did John say is one of the many reasons we should love God?  1 John 4:19.

Answer: Because He us.

When we couldn’t have cared less, God couldn’t have cared more!  From the cross of Calvary Jesus could look down through the centuries to see each of His brethren and His Father's children that would be saved because of what He was doing!

Think of the pain that Jesus endured to save us!  Perhaps as the soldiers were beating Him the devil said to Him, "Give up on this wretched race, they don't care about You! They're not worth it!"  And the Lord may have said, "No! I love them too much! I must save them!"  When they were delivering the 39 stripes to His body with the terrible Roman scourge that tore open His flesh exposing muscle and veins, perhaps the tempter taunted Him again saying, "Give up on them, they don't care!  Why save them?"  But Jesus took those stripes because He knew that by them we would be healed from the disease of sin!  "I love them too much!"

Thinking only of us, He hardly felt the pain of the cruel spikes in His hands that so often comforted and healed others, and through those feet that often took Him on missions of mercy for the lost. The loving Savior cried out, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do!"  His prayer included the world!  HE WAS MADE A CURSE FOR US!  Three times His enemies jeered, “Save yourself!  Come down from the cross if you are the Son of God." He couldn't save us, if He saved Himself.  He was denied and betrayed by His closest friends.  "My God!  My God!  Why have you forsaken Me?"  He cried!   O friend, God loves you! He really, REALLY loves you! Let Him fill you with His agape love!

10.  How can we show the Lord that we love Him for what He has done for us?  John 14:15 and 1 John 5:3.

Answer: By His .

Through the remainder of these lessons, you will be learning a lot about what God's word says about His law, Jesus' return, the seventh-day Sabbath, and many other Bible truths.  All these truths of God are to be believed and followed by us because obedience shows God that we love him.  You see, the Lord actually writes His law in the heart of the believer.  This new motivation transcends fear of being lost or hope of reward in being saved.   Abraham's faith enabled him to live under the new covenant, while multitudes of Christians today live under the old covenant because self-centered concern is their motivation.  The old covenant was the promise of the people to be faithful; under the new covenant, salvation comes by believing God's promises to enable us to obey, not by our promises to Him.  It is love for God that will motivate the true believer.

Are you ready for that kind of Christian life?  If you are, it can begin today!  Believe that God loves you and He has provided salvation for you full and free.  Receive that salvation by faith and allow the Lord entrance into your heart to abide there forever!  Jesus said, "Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and sup with him and he with Me." - Revelation 3:20.
