Lesson 3: The Good News about the Godhead

We are
ONE
ELOHIM

In the King James Version of the Bible, and also in many other versions, the word "Lord" in the Old Testament is written LORD in capital letters.  This is to indicate that in the original Hebrew text, the sacred name YAHWEH is written. The translators of the King James Version translated the sacred name YHWH (pronounced YA-WAY) as LORD capitalized. So each time you see the word LORD in all capital letters in the various Bible translations, that is where the sacred name YAHWEH is written in the original Scriptures.

Some use the name "Jehovah" as the sacred name of God.  But recent research in the area of ancient Hebrew language, texts, and pronunciation has conclusively proven YAHWEH to be a much more accurate pronunciation of the sacred name. On page 87 of the Jewish Encyclopedia, Volume 7, it states:

"This pronunciation (Jehovah) is grammatically impossible. It arose through pronouncing the vowels of the word 'Adonai' with the consonants of YHWH."

The term "Yahweh" comes from the Hebrew version of Exodus 3:14. Moses asked the Lord what his name was. See Exodus 3:13 now. The Lord answered by saying that His name was "I AM THAT I AM".  In Hebrew this term is "eyeh asher eyeh."  It is from this term that the name Yahweh is derived.

The word translated "God" in the Old Testament is the Hebrew word "Elohim" (pronounced: L-O-HEEM), and it is a plural term.  Elohim means "Mighty" or "Great" Ones. The word "Elohim" is a collective noun somewhat like the English word "family" is a collective noun. Being such a collective noun, it requires a singular verb like the word "family" does. In the Bible, the word "Elohim," even though a plural term, is often accompanied by verbs in the singular. This is significant! There can be ONE family made up of THREE persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. There are three living Persons of the heavenly Trio. Each of the thee Persons of the Godhead is "Elohim" or "God" as we say in English.

1. What did Yahweh say about His name in Exodus 3:15 (last part)?

Fill in:  "... this is My , and this is My to all ."

Our God said that Yahweh would be His name forever and that it would be the memorial name throughout all generations! That includes you and me! In these lessons you will notice that the name Yahweh is used often. See also Isaiah 42:8.

All the attributes of the Father have been made plain in the Scriptures, and His loving character is evident in the "book of nature" that we all "read" every day! Our hearts also tell us of a God who is loving, kind, and also perfectly just. But the greatest picture of the Father's character was seen in the life of Jesus, His Son. Jesus said, "He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father!" See John 14:8-9.

Yahweh, our heavenly Father, so loved the world that He gave His Son to save it! In this lesson, we will learn more about the Godhead of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. First, let's study a bit about Jesus, our Savior.

With so many groups that deny the Deity (Godhood) of the Lord, Jesus Christ, it is essential for us to know the plain truth about this matter. For the Scriptures teach that "whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also." 1 John 2:23.

2. Does the Bible teach that Jesus was EQUAL with God?  Phil. 2:5-6.

Answer: .

3. Did Jesus claim to be ONE with His Father? John 10:30-33.

Answer: .

4. What did Thomas call Jesus in John 20:28?

Answer:  My and my .

If Jesus were not God, He would have rebuked Thomas and said something like, "Do not Call me God."  But He did not do this!  He accepted the title because He was and IS God!

5. In Matthew 4:10, who did Jesus tell Satan was the only One worthy of worship?

Answer: .

6. Did Jesus allow people to WORSHIP Him?  Matthew 8:2 & 15:25.

Answer: .

If Jesus were just a man, or an angel and not ‘God,’ He would surely have stopped the people from worshipping Him as Peter did in Acts 10:25-26, and as the angel did in Revelation 22:8-9. But Jesus accepted the worship because He was Himself part of the Godhead, and as such was worthy of worship!

7. What does God the Father command all the angels to do to His
Son? Hebrews 1:6.

Answer: Him!

Since the Scriptures plainly teach that only God is worthy of worship, and all the angels are commanded to worship Jesus, is it not plain that He is God?

8. In verse 8 of Hebrews 1, what does the Father plainly call His Son?

Answer: .

9. What does the apostle John say about Jesus (the "Word") in John 1:1?

Fill in: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was .

Verse 14 of this chapter tells us that "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." This of course refers to Jesus. John clearly writes that the "Word" was "God"! One group, in an attempt to negate this clear testimony regarding the deity of Christ, added the word "a" in their own translation of the Holy Scriptures. But almost every Greek scholar agrees that this is a gross twisting of the Greek text and an impossible translation! Besides, calling Jesus "a God" would deny the very word of Yahweh Himself because Isaiah 43:10 and other Scriptures make it very clear that there were no “other” Gods formed either before or after Yahweh! Jesus is God the Son, the second Person of Elohim, the ONE Godhead!

10. Since there are some groups who say we should not pray to Jesus but only to the Father, is there Scripture evidence of men praying to Jesus? Acts 7:59.

Answer: .

Stephen knew that Jesus was God and he prayed to Him calling “upon God and saying, Lord Jesus"!

Turn to Colossians 1:15 and read it. Some make a point that this verse states that James is the “firstborn of every creature." From this they assert Jesus was “created". But the term “firstborn" can also be translated “foremost" or “most Important." For example, David is called the “firstborn" in Psalm 89:27. Yet, David was not the “firstborn" of Jesse's children. In fact, he was the youngest! David was called the “firstborn" because God chose him to be “foremost" of all of Jesse’s sons. In the same way, Jesus is called the “firstborn" or “foremost" of every creature! He is “God over all"! If we read verse 18 of Colossians 1, we will read that Jesus was called the “firstborn from the dead." Yet we know that Lazarus and others were resurrected before Him! He is the “firstborn from the dead" in the sense that He is the One through whom all others will be resurrected!

11. At his birth, Jesus was to be called “Immanuel." What does this name mean? Matthew 1:23.

Answer: with us.

Special Note on the name “Jesus”: The name Jesus is derived from the Hebrew name Joshua (pronounced Yah-shoo-a). This is the Savior's name, and it means "YAHWEH is salvation." Because of the popularity of the Greek translation of the New Testament, the name Jesus became popular, and certainly this name is recognized by our Savior. Those who call on the name Jesus are saved! But nevertheless, it is good for us to know and honor the true name of our Savior, and to understand what it means!

12. In Colossians 2:9, what does it say dwelt In Jesus?

Answer: All the of the bodily.

13. Who does the Bible say "purchased" the church "with His own blood"? Acts 20:28.

Answer: .

Since it is clear that it was Jesus our Savior who shed His blood for our sins, is it not plain that this text declares Jesus to be God?

14. What two Persons come to make their "abode" with the believer through the Holy Spirit? John 14:23.

Answer: Both the and the .

From this text of Scripture, we learn that the Holy Spirit, which indwells the believer, includes the Spirit of both the Father and the Son. Notice that Jesus said, "We will come ... and make OUR abode" with the believer. The way that BOTH the Father and the Son live in the believer is through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirits that we are the children of God. This third Person is called the Holy Ghost or the Spirit of God. We need to realize that the Holy Spirit is as much a person as the Father and the Son, yet in a unique way that no mortal can fully explain! Even though the Father and Son are in Heaven, through the Holy Spirit they can also be everywhere in the universe. If man can broadcast television programs around the world so that everyone can see and hear a news commentator's image and voice around the world, why is it hard to understand that the Godhead can do vastly greater and fill the universe with their Spirit and also know even the thoughts and actions of all living creatures! How great is our God!

It is by the Spirit that Faster and Son do all their work throughout the vast expanse of the universe. He is the active Agent for carrying out their will.

15. Is the Holy Spirit present throughout the entire universe at once? Jeremiah 23:24 and Psalm 139:7-10.

Answer: .

16. Can the Holy Spirit "speak"? Revelation 22:17.

Answer: .

A "thing" cannot speak! But the Holy Spirit can "speak" because He is a Person! We desperately need the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives! It is through the Holy Spirit's power that we are transformed into the image of Christ!

17. Did Jesus refer to the Holy Spirit as a Person? John 14:26.

Answer: .

Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as "He" and not as "it." The Holy Spirit must be a Person, else He could not search out the secrets which lie hidden in the mind of God. “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." See 1 Corinthians 2:11.

18. Jesus gave the command to baptize in the name of what three Persons? Matthew 28:19.

Answer: The , the , and the .

If the Holy Spirit were merely the Spirit of the Father, it would not be necessary to mention His name separately at a person's baptism. But Jesus definitely taught His disciples to use the Holy Spirit's name when baptizing a believer. There are three living Persons of the Godhead; in the name of these three great powers, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit --- those who receive Christ by living faith are baptized.

19. How did Jesus explain how He and His Father are "ONE"? John 17:11.

Fill in: "And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to Thee, , keep through Thine own those whom Thou hast given Me, that they may be , as .

The Savior prayed that His disciples would be ONE in mind, ONE in purpose, ONE in unity, and ONE in love, even as He and the Father are ONE! Jesus did not pray that the twelve disciples literally become one entity with twelve heads! How strange that when some people think of the three Persons of the Godhead, they view it as some type of strange mysterious being with three heads! Remember that Jesus said the disciples were to be one in the SAME WAY that He and the Father are ONE!

20. How many times did the angel that Isaiah the prophet saw cry out the word "Holy"? Isaiah 6:1-3.

Answer: times.

Many Bible scholars believe that this was done to show respect and reverence for the THREE Persons that make up the Godhead of Elohim!

21. Do you believe that there are THREE divine Persons in the ONE Godhead as the Scriptures teach?

Answer: .
