In this day and age, many are trying to live "by bread alone."  That is, by the material things of life, and they forget that they need to feed their spiritual nature with the Word of God!

Private interpretation of the Scriptures would be where certain groups teach that a certain Bible text means this, or means that, without having any biblical or historical proof for their private interpretation.   Usually private interpretation of Scripture contradicts other portions of Scripture, on the same subject.

9. What did the resurrected Jesus do to teach two of His disciples a proper understanding of the word of God?  Luke 24:27.

Fill in:   "And beginning at  and the prophets, He unto them in the the things concerning Himself".

Jesus began with Moses’ writings (the first five books of the Bible) and went through the prophets'  writings taking pertinent texts from "all the Scriptures" while giving a Bible study to  these two disciples.  The subject of that Bible study that Jesus taught was the gospel, the good news of His life, His death, and His resurrection!  These studies you are doing use the same method Jesus used!  Pertinent texts from ‘all the Scriptures’ are consulted in order to get a complete understanding of each Bible truth as it is in Jesus!

We need to be aware of groups that have their own private set of Scriptures!   Usually these unorthodox translations of Scripture, or private set of ‘Scriptures’ unique to one group or church adds things to the Bible that  are never found in any Greek or Hebrew manuscripts of the Sacred Scriptures!   For identification of these false Scriptures and translations, see the book So Many Versions by Sakae Kubo & Walter Specht.  You can order this book at your local Christian bookstore.

One of the greatest proofs of the Bible’s divine inspiration is the many prophecies of the Bible that have come to pass in the exact manner as foretold by God.  The prophecies of the Bible is history told to us in advance!   One of the most amazing of these prophecies is the prophecy of Daniel chapter 2.  Let's now turn to Daniel chapter 2 and read verses 1 through 30 before we continue.

King Nebuchadnezzar had a very impressive dream and none of the wise men of Babylon could tell him the meaning of the dream.  The dream came to this pagan king at a time when Babylon ruled the world.  He was lying on his bed wondering what would happen after his great kingdom.  (See verse 29).   The Lord God revealed to Nebuchadnezzar "what shall be in the latter days"; in other words, in history to follow.  In fact,  this  vision given to the king and interpreted by the prophet Daniel  tells the entire history from 600 B.C. until the setting up of the kingdom of God which Is soon to come!

16.  What did King Nebuchadnezzar see in his dream?  Daniel 2:31.

Answer:   A .

17.  What metals did this great statue consist of?  Verses 32-33.

Answer:   Head of , chest and arms of , stomach and thighs of , legs of and toes part of and part of .

18.  What did the king see strike the image on its toes, and what was the result?  Verses 34-35.

Answer:   A cut out without hands.   The struck the image on its feet, and the great image was and the wind carried the of the statue away.

 19.  What kingdom did the head of gold represent?  Verses 36-38.

Answer:  The kingdom of .

The head of gold represented the golden kingdom of Babylon.  This is the beginning point of the prophecy.  In verse 39 the Lord predicted through Daniel that another kingdom inferior to Babylon would conquer it.  This kingdom, history tells us, was the Medo-Persian kingdom represented by the chest and arms of silver!   Although Medo-Persia was an inferior kingdom to Babylon, it conquered the mighty Babylon in 539 B.C.

Babylon was surrounded by huge walls which protected the city from any enemy.  The Babylonian king laughed when he heard of the approach of the troops of Cyrus.  He was wall prepared.   His defenses were completed; his mighty city had all the provisions it needed, and the mighty walls, well protected,   afforded Babylon safety, or so he thought!   But God’s word said  an "inferior kingdom" would conquer Babylon!

A plan came to Cyrus that if the water of the Euphrates River, which ran under the mighty walls of Babylon, could be diverted until the river was low enough for his armies to ford, they could march right under the walls of Babylon into the city!

But there were gates that would have prevented their entry into the city.  The night of the capture of Babylon was a night of celebration and feasting.  The people were so occupied with their drinking and partying that they did not even notice the level of the water of the Euphrates River go down.  And one hundred and seventy years before the event, God had said something  about those great bronze gates of Babylon.

20. What did the Lord say He would do for Cyrus (even naming the general Cyrus even before he was born!) concerning the "two leaved gates"?  Isaiah 45:1.

Answer:  them and the gates shall not be .

The night that Cyrus’ troops marched under the walls of Babylon, the gate keepers were so drunk they forgot to shut the gates that would have protected the city from this invasion.  This is just what God's word had said 170 years before!  And that night the Medo-Persian Empire conquered Babylon!  See Daniel 5:30-31.

In Daniel 2:39, the prophet said that a "third kingdom of brass ... shall bear rule over the earth."   History tells us that the Grecian Empire of Alexander the Great conquered Medo-Persia and went on to rule the world until the empire of Rome which succeeded it!  The Roman Empire was called the "Iron Empire" and it was represented in the vision by the legs of iron!

21.  What did the Lord's word say would happen to the iron legs of  the image?  Daniel 2:40-41.

Answer:  They would be .    The feet of the image were made part of and part of .

This is exactly what happened to the mighty Roman Empire.  In the fourth century the Barbarian hordes began to attack the Roman Empire weakened by political and moral decay.  These tribes that invaded claimed territories until the empire was broken up to form modern Europe!  This is what the ten toes on the feet of the image represented!

22.  What did the Lord say about these nations of Europe?  Daniel 2:42-43.

Answer:  "They shall one to another ...".

Napoleon, Hitler, and others tried to go against this prophecy of God and unite all of Europe into one empire.  But God said "they shall not cleave one to another!"  Friends, God's word is sure!  And remember, these words were written in approximately 600 B.C., and yet they told in advance the history of nations until the end of time and beyond!

23.  What did the Lord say would happen in the days of these "kings"?  Verses 44-45.

Answer:  The God of heaven shall set up His .

The rock that struck this image on its feet represents the Lord Jesus Christ.  He is the "Rock of Ages"!  See 1 Corinthians 10:4.   The fact that the rock struck the image on its feet tells us that it is today, while we are living in the feet of the image, so to speak, that we are to look for Jesus to come!  Europe will not be united into one empire because God said that Jesus would come in the days of those "kings"!  Friends, the Lord Jesus will soon return and set up His kingdom which will reign forever and ever!  We will learn more about this in lesson 6.

God's word is sure and steadfast.  Believe it.  Live by it and you will never go wrong!

24.  Are you willing to accept the Bible as the sure word of God, and will you decide to live by this word?

Answer: .
