Lesson 6: The Holy Sabbath Day

A 6,000 Year Old Remedy for Tension

The Bible teaches that the observance of the seventh day Sabbath (the day we call Saturday today) is the fourth of the Ten Commandments.  Those who love the Lord and recognize Him as their Creator and Redeemer will, motivated by love, obey God’s laws. In fact, it will be the truly converted soul’s desire to do so!

1.  When was the seventh day Sabbath made?  Genesis 2:2-3.

Answer:  On the day of creation week.

2.  Who was the Sabbath made for?  Mark 2:27-28.

Answer: .

The Seventh-day Sabbath was made for all mankind, and it is not limited to any one race of people.  It was made holy and consecrated by our Creator at the end of creation week. This was done before sin entered the world through Adam and Eve’s fall. The Sabbath was made holy by God many centuries before Abraham (from whom the “Jews” came) existed.  So those who teach that the seventh day Sabbath was intended for the Jews only, simply do not understand the Scriptures or the intent of God!  The Sabbath was “made for MAN.”   God is not the Creator of the Jewish race only, but of all mankind!  The Sabbath is the sign that He is the Creator!

3.  According to John 1:1-13, who was it that MADE all things?

Answer: .

Since we read in Mark 2:27-28 that the “Sabbath was MADE for man,” and the verse we just read says that the “Word” (Jesus) made all things, we can safely conclude that JESUS MADE THE SABBATH!

4.  Why is God worthy of our worship?  Revelation 4:11.

Answer:  Because He all things.

The Sabbath is the memorial of His creative work.

5.  Revelation 14:7 records a message that is to go to the entire world in the last days of earth’s history.  Who are we commanded to worship in this text?

Answer:  "Worship Him that heaven and earth ..."

Some teach that Jesus’ death on Calvary’s cross abolished the reason for seventh-day Sabbath observance, but Calvary did not change the fact that in “six days the LORD (Yahweh in Hebrew) made the heavens and the earth”!  In the book of Revelation we are told to worship Him that created all things.  The language found in Revelation 14:7 is very similar to the language found in Exodus 20:11, the fourth commandment!  We are still to worship the Creator, and the Sabbath is the sign that He IS THE CREATOR.

"You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created."

Revelation 4:11

6.  Why did the Lord make the Sabbath?  Exodus 20:8-11.

Fill in:  Verse 11:  “For in days, the Lord heaven and earth, the and all that in them is.”

It is impossible to worship the God of heaven as Creator if we willingly fail to observe the seventh day Sabbath.  The reason for this is because the Sabbath was given to mankind so that they would remember their Creator.  Claiming to worship the Creator and yet breaking the seventh-day Sabbath command would be like saying you love America, and yet, trampling on the American flag!  The Sabbath is God’s memorial of creation!  Some people call Sunday, the first day of the week, the “Sabbath,” but Sunday is never referred to as the Sabbath in the Bible.

7.  In the “New Earth” that will be created after this present earth is destroyed, what day will everyone worship on?  Isaiah 66:22-23.

Answer:  the day.

If we will be keeping it forever in the new earth, does it not stand to reason that it has not been abolished now?

8.  Jesus went to worship services on what day?  Luke 4:16.

Answer:  On the day.

9.  Did the early Christians living after Jesus’ death and resurrection observe the Sabbath?  Acts 16:13.

Answer: .

10.  In Acts 13:42-45, after the Jews had left the synagogue, the Gentiles wanted to hear Paul preach some more.  When did Paul tell them to come back for more preaching and worship services?

Answer:  The next day.

According to these verses, the Jews had “gone out of the synagogue.” (KJV)   If Paul was a Sunday keeper, as some say, it would have been the perfect opportunity for Paul to invite these Gentiles who were pleading with him to preach some more to come back the next day for Sunday service!  But he didn’t tell them that because Paul held no Sunday services!  It says that the NEXT SABBATH DAY the whole town came back for preaching and worship services!  There is not a single verse of Scripture that commands anyone to keep Sunday holy!  But there are literally scores of verses commanding us to observe the seventh day Sabbath!

11.  Did those who loved and followed Jesus observe the Sabbath even after His death?   See Luke 23:50-56.

Answer:  .

From this text of Scripture, it is plain that these women who loved and followed Jesus and who knew what He taught kept the seventh-day Sabbath carefully, not even anointing their Master’s dead body on the Sabbath day!  Surely they would have obeyed Jesus if He taught that after His death they did not need to keep the seventh day Sabbath as some teach today!

"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God."

12.  What does Ezekiel 20:12 tell us the Sabbath is?

Answer:  It is a between us and the .

Since the only way we can be “sanctified” is through the righteousness of Christ, it is plain then that the Sabbath is also a sign of sanctification.  The new birth is also the work of the Creator!  “If any man be in Christ, He is a NEW CREATURE.”  2 Corinthians 5:17.  Thus, the Sabbath is a sign of the Creator’s re-creation of the human heart at conversion!

13.  To be a commandment keeper, how many of the Ten Commandments must I be keeping?  James 2:10-12.

Answer:  .

Jerusalem was surrounded by the Roman armies and destroyed by Titus in AD 70.  Why would Jesus encourage His disciples to pray that their flight be not on the Sabbath if at that time they wouldn't be keeping it?

James wrote this epistle in approximately 50 AD, some nineteen years after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension.  He still believed that the Ten Commandments were binding upon all men! Notice also that we will be “judged” by the Ten Commandments! James called them the “law of liberty,” and not a “yoke of bondage” as the false teachers claim the Ten Commandments are. It is the lawbreaker who goes to prison and is put in bondage, not the law keeper!  Also, we must observe all ten of the commandments.  Nine tenths of obedience is not obedience at all!

In over 105 languages in the world, the word for the seventh day of the week is "Sabbath"!

14.  Were there other "ceremonial" sabbaths that were not part of the Ten Commandments?  Leviticus 23:24-32.

Answer:  .

When Jesus died on the cross, the temple curtain was ripped from top to bottom by an angel’s hand to show that in heaven's sight, earthly sacrifices were to cease.  Jesus, the true “Lamb of God” had died on the cross!  See Matthew 27:51.

After Jesus’ death, all the ceremonial sabbaths and laws that pertained to sacrifice and offerings came to an end.  It is these ceremonial sabbaths that were a “shadow” of the cross, and hence are now done away with!

In Leviticus 23:37-38, it makes very plain the distinction between the ceremonial sabbaths and the “Sabbaths of the Lord.”  The seventh day Sabbath existed before sin entered the world and is not a “shadow” of the cross!  The seventh day Sabbath was a memorial of creation and will be observed even in the new earth as we have already learned.  Be careful that no one deceives you on this point!  Some take verses such as Colossians 2 and “twist” the meaning to excuse their Sabbath breaking!  Peter warned us about this.  See 2 Peter 3:15-17.

Can we really be sure which day the "Seventh" day is?

The only way that the seventh-day Sabbath could be done away with is that another God more powerful than Yahweh would have to come along, destroy the entire universe, create a new one, and give another day in memorial of his creation!  But friends, there is no other God!  As long as the universe exists the seventh day Sabbath will be observed!

"In it you shall do no work; you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates."

15.  What did Daniel say the false Religious power known as the “Little Horn” would try to do?  Daniel 7:25.

Answer:  Seek to and .

This he has done, and in so doing has deceived the whole world! Choose rather, to obey God’s Word!
